🚓 Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Weekend Arrest

  • Authorities arrested Marcus Dwayne Sterman, age 51, Saturday evening.
  • Sterman is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault by strangulation, and false imprisonment.
  • Additional charges include:
    • Two counts of assault with physical injury to a detention employee
    • Communicating threats
    • Habitual misdemeanor assault
    • Disorderly conduct
    • Littering
  • He is being held on $785,000 bond.

🍽️ New Senior Lunch Site Opening in New London

  • Stanly County Senior Services will open a new Senior Nutrition Lunch Site on August 4, located at the New London Community Center (114 West Gold Street).
  • Grand Opening event: August 4, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM, featuring an ice cream social and special guests.
  • Lunch is available that day for seniors 60+ who pre-register by August 1 by calling 704-463-4785.
  • Ongoing lunch service will be:
    • Monday–Friday, 11 AM – 12 PM
    • Meals catered by Golden Corral
    • On-site dining only — no takeouts allowed.
  • “We are thankful to the town of New London for their partnership and support with bringing this much-needed service to the northern part of our county,” said Pamela Sullivan, Director of Stanly County Senior Services.
  • This will be the fifth lunch site, joining locations in Albemarle, Norwood, Oakboro, and Locust.

💧 Albemarle Welcomes New Public Utilities Director

  • Albemarle City Manager Todd Clark formally introduced Tom Johnson to the City Council as the new Public Utilities Director.
  • Johnson brings over 35 years of experience in water and wastewater operations across both municipal and private sectors.
  • Most recently served as Water Resources Utility Director for the City of Lexington.
  • Previous roles include work in High Point, Winston-Salem, and Thomasville.
  • “The staff here… has just put out a very welcoming and warm [environment]. It’s been really great,” said Johnson on his first day.
  • He will lead infrastructure efforts like advanced metering system development and oversee water treatment and distribution operations.

✂️ Ribbon Cutting at Endy Elementary This Morning

  • Stanly County Schools will host a ribbon cutting at Endy Elementary School today at 10:00 AM.
  • Location: 27670 Betty Road, Albemarle.
  • The ceremony celebrates a new building addition that will benefit students, staff, and the community.
  • “The new addition represents a significant investment in our schools and reflects our commitment to a high-quality learning environment,” school officials said.
