🚒 Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation at Stanly Commons
- Stanly Commons was evacuated Monday morning due to the smell of natural gas inside the building.
- Stanly County Manager Andy Lucas said the fire department responded, evacuated the building, and ventilated it before giving the all-clear.
- Piedmont Natural Gas was on-site repairing rooftop natural gas air units.
🚰 Norwood Reports Past Water Quality Exceedance
- Norwood officials mailed water quality notices this week after HAA5 levels exceeded standards in late 2024.
- Officials clarified that the only true exceedance occurred in Q3 of 2024, but because HAA5 is measured on a rolling four-quarter average, it required reporting.
- HAA5 is a disinfectant byproduct formed when chlorine interacts with organic matter.
- The spike was linked to elevated organic content in Lake Tillery during that period.
- Chemical treatment changes were made promptly, and no exceedances have occurred since.
🏥 Stanly Commissioners Reappoint Nursing Home Advocates
- The Stanly County Board of Commissioners approved re appointments to the Centralina Nursing Homes Community Advisory Committee.
- County Manager Andy Lucas recommended reappointing:
- Johnny Harris
- Jim Meisenheimer
- Lane Peeler
- Joyce Ross
- All four will serve new three-year terms ending June 30, 2028.
📚 Library Praised for Summer Programs & Digital Outreach
- Commissioner Scott Efird commended Stanly County Library staff at the commissioner meeting.
- He praised the library website and summer programs, especially the Digital Navigator program.
- Efird, who serves on the library board, said, “I thoroughly enjoy being on the library board. I’ve learned so much in just six months.”
👮 SCC Celebrates Law Enforcement Training Graduates
- Stanly Community College honored graduates of its Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program in a ceremony at the Albemarle campus.
- Chief Ryan Manley of Albemarle Police gave the keynote address.
- SCC President Dr. John Enamait said, “Our BLET program produces more than graduates—it produces leaders.”
- The rigorous five-month program includes nearly 900 hours of training.
- This class earned a 100% pass rate on the state certification exam.
