🌧️ Heavy Rains Lead to Flooding and Travel Hazards
Steady rainfall in Stanly County this week caused flooding issues and downed trees in several areas:
- The Low Water Bridge in Oakboro was submerged
- Water surged through manhole covers at the corner of Salisbury Avenue and Highway 52
- Trees were reported down along East Street in Albemarle
- Little Long Creek approached flood stage
More rain on Wednesday worsened the situation, contributing to hazardous driving conditions.
🚔 DWI Arrest Involving Child Passenger
A woman was arrested this week after allegedly racing with a child in the car while impaired.
40-year-old Niki Leann Woody faces several charges including:
- Prearranged speed competition
- Reckless driving to endanger
- Driving while impaired
- Driving while license revoked
- Possession of an open container
- Misdemeanor child abuse
She is being held at the Stanly County Detention Center.
🚒 West Stanly Fire Runs Total at 745 for the Year
The West Stanly Fire Department responded to 118 calls in July, bringing their 2025 total to 745.
Breakdown of July activity:
- 🔥 6 working fires
- 🚗 1 extrication
- 🚁 2 flyouts
- 🌊 2 water rescues
🛑 Speed Enforcement Nets Over 100 Traffic Stops
The Albemarle Police Department participated in the statewide “Speeding Catches Up With You” campaign from July 21–27.
Results in Albemarle included:
- 🚓 108 total traffic stops
- ⚠️ 33 speeding violations
- 👶 2 child seat restraint violations
“Every time you speed, you put lives at risk,” officers said. “Drive smart, drive safe.”
🔌 Locust City Hall Closing Early Friday
The City of Locust will close City Hall and Police Department offices around noon on Friday, August 8, due to a planned Duke Power outage related to senior center construction.
While the offices will close, police officers will remain on duty 24/7.
👮♂️ Albemarle Police Focus on Outreach, Overdose Prevention
Police Chief Jason Manley says the Albemarle Police Department is prioritizing both outreach and safety. Recent efforts include:
- Participation in Coffee with a Cop, Christmas parades, and Community Night Out
- Over 1,000 people attended the 2024 Community Night Out
- The department is planning the 2025 event now
Drug Prevention & Overdose Stats:
- ⚕️ 46 overdose cases in 2024 — an increase from the previous year
- ✅ No fatal overdoses
- 💊 Nearly 200,000 grams of medication collected in Operation Medicine Drop
“If you have unused or expired prescriptions, drop them off at our locations so they don’t end up in the wrong hands,” said Chief Manley.
🎯 Stanly’s “Chicken House Bandits” Shine on National Stage
A local youth shooting sports team has brought national recognition to Stanly County!
The North Stanly Shooting Sports Junior Team, also known as the Chicken House Bandits, competed in the NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge National Championship in Bentonville, Arkansas, July 20–26.
After qualifying at the state level in Ellerbe back in April, the team delivered a standout performance at Nationals:
🏆 Team Awards:
- 🥉 3rd Place Overall – Junior Division
- 🏹 1st Place – Archery
- 🐾 1st Place – Wildlife ID
- 🔫 2nd Place – Shotgun
- 📘 2nd Place – Responsibility Exam
🏅 Individual Awards:
- 🥇 Case Furr – 1st Place, Wildlife ID
- 🥉 Parker Shaver – 3rd Place, Shotgun
- 🥉 Brett Burnside – 3rd Place, Muzzleloader

North Carolina teams overall stood tall, with the Perquimans County Senior Team taking first place in their division.
