A man is recovering after being shot late Sunday morning in the Dollar General parking lot on West Main Street near Stanly Community College.
Police say 50-year-old Martin Hambrick of Albemarle was arrested at the scene following a physical altercation.
The victim, who was known to Hambrick, suffered a single gunshot wound and is listed in stable condition.
Hambrick is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Gray Stone Day School in Misenheimer earned national recognition in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The school placed 30th in North Carolina and 898th nationally out of more than 24,000 schools.
Gray Stone received a 94.98 out of 100 overall score, with:
- 93% of students taking at least one AP exam
- 64% passing at least one AP exam
- 92% graduation rate
Helen Nance, Chief Administrative Officer, said: “Being named one of the top high schools in the country is a tremendous honor and testament to the exceptional efforts of our students, educators, and staff.”
Gray Stone also earned Platinum distinction on the 2024 AP Program School Honor Roll.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 36-year-old Jerome Dumas in connection with the October 2024 drive-by shooting death of 25-year-old Cornelius Dante Little.
Charges include:
- First-degree murder
- Possession of a firearm by a felon
- Two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied property
- Assault by pointing a gun
Dumas is being held without bond.

The West Stanly Fire Department responded to 116 calls in August, bringing their 2025 total to 861.
Calls included:
- 6 working fires
- 2 extrications
- 2 medical flyouts
- 2 water rescues

The Stanly County Board of Elections will meet October 7 at 4 PM to consider dissolving the West Center Precinct.
Due to difficulty staffing poll workers, the precinct may be split between Tyson and East Center precincts.
