⚖️ Tie-Breaker on State School Board Nominee
At the most recent Board of Education meeting, a tie vote forced Chairwoman Robin Whitaker to break the deadlock over the county’s nominee to the North Carolina School Boards Association Board of Directors.
Two nominees were put forward:
- Glenda Gibson – long-time board leader, retired educator, former chair and vice chair.
- Carla Poplin – experienced board member, former chair, active in statewide education policy.
Board members offered strong words for both:
- Megan Almond, supporting Poplin: “She has the skills, the vision and the heart to help guide our state school board through today’s challenges.”
- Dustin Lisk, supporting Gibson: “She’s shown tremendous dedication to the county, and as a retired educator, she has the time to serve.”
- Bill Sorenson, weighing both: “I’d be honored for either of these ladies to represent us… Ms. Poplin’s background makes her a strong candidate on paper.”
With votes tied 3–3, Chairwoman Whitaker cast the deciding vote for Glenda Gibson, making her the nominee.
