đźš“ Man Faces Strangulation and Kidnapping Charges
A Stanly County man is facing several serious charges following his arrest late last week.
- 40-year-old Michael Zachary Quan was booked into the Stanly County Detention Center on Friday, October 17th, charged with:
- Assault by strangulation
- Second-degree kidnapping
- Domestic violence
- Communicating threats
- Kwan remains held at the detention center pending court proceedings.
🏙️ City Manager Updates Council on Projects and Events
At the latest Albemarle City Council meeting, City Manager Darren Rhodes gave an update on several ongoing city projects and recent community events.
Rhodes said the Food Truck Friday series wrapped up successfully:
“Friday was our last Food Truck Friday. We estimated about 15,000 people attended over the six events this year.”
He thanked Parks and Recreation staff, including Lisa Kiser, Cindy Burris, and other city employees who helped make the event a success.
Other updates included:
- All positions funded through the SAFER Grant have been filled, and equipment has been purchased.
- The Fourth Street I&I Project is underway, with new manholes and pipe installations in progress. About 200 additional feet of pipe remain before completion, expected within weeks.
🛣️ Mayor Discusses Road Repairs and Paving Plan
Mayor Ronnie Michael also addressed council members about upcoming paving and maintenance needs.
“A couple meetings ago, we discussed road repairs and maintenance. Public Works has requested we continue with the approved five-year paving plan this year,” said the mayor.
The city will stay on track with the plan while addressing potholes and other issues as needed.

WSPC and partners have recognized two outstanding community members as October’s Hometown Heroes — one for youth service and one in healthcare.
💖 Amaya Jones – Student & Founder of Amaya’s Angels
A seventh grader at West Stanly Middle School, Amaya’s creative project, Amaya’s Angels, is part of her family’s Caroline Cares Project. Each Christmas, she hand-colors paper angels for stockings given to those in need — small gestures that spread kindness and hope.
Amaya’s active in dance, drama, and Girl Scout Troop 409, continuing a strong family legacy of education and service.
🏥 Lauren Morris – Atrium Health Stanly
Our Healthcare Hometown Hero is Lauren Morris, a Management Nursing Associate at Atrium Health Stanly. She manages scheduling and payroll across inpatient departments — work that keeps hospital operations running smoothly.
Known for her organization and positivity, Lauren’s been honored with the Shining Star Award and serves as Secretary of the Professional Council, helping coordinate awards and recognition programs.
A mother of four, she’s also pursuing her MBA while inspiring others with her dedication and heart for service.
