🚔 Locust Police Release September Report

The Locust Police Department has shared its monthly activity report for September:

  • 364 dispatch calls handled
  • 2,269 business and neighborhood patrols
  • 233 traffic stops
  • 36 arrests, including 6 DWIs
  • 20 traffic crashes investigated

Police officials say proactive patrols and increased visibility continue to be a key part of maintaining safety in the growing city.


🎄 Locust Accepting Nominations for 2025 Christmas Parade Grand Marshal

The City of Locust is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Christmas Parade Grand Marshal.

  • Nominees should be Locust residents or individuals who have made meaningful contributions within the city.
  • Submissions should include details about the nominee and their community impact.
  • The nomination deadline is November 1st.

After the deadline, the parade committee will review all submissions and select this year’s honoree. Nominations can be submitted through the City of Locust website.


🚒 Albemarle Fire Department September Activity

The Albemarle Fire Department responded to 73 fire calls and 186 EMS calls in September.

  • Received 4 mutual aid assists
  • Provided 5 mutual aid assists
  • Average dispatch time: 1 minute, 16 seconds
  • Average arrival time: 4 minutes, 22 seconds

Fire officials say the department remains committed to quick response times and strong regional cooperation.


🏫 South Stanly Teacher Wins Bright Ideas Grant

Meredith Howell, a teacher at South Stanly High School, has been awarded a Bright Ideas Grant from Union Power Cooperative and Pee Dee Electric — for the third time.

She’ll use the grant to enhance her Holocaust Literature class and organize a Holocaust Remembrance Day event in December, featuring:

  • Musical tributes and survivor testimonies
  • Art exhibits and candle lighting
  • Readings and student-created projects

School officials praised Howell for her dedication to meaningful, student-centered learning.


🐑 Stanly County Woman Inducted into NC State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame

Ellen Mabry of Stanly County has been inducted into the North Carolina State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame.

Mabry began raising sheep in 1975 and has been deeply involved in youth livestock programs for decades.

“She made it possible to actually show animals at the county fair,” one producer said. “She’s let many kids borrow sheep and helped grow the shows in Stanly County.”

Highlights of her lifelong contributions:

  • Served as president, treasurer, and board member of the NC Sheep Producers
  • Helped start the NC Born and Bred Class at the State Fair
  • Organized the Stanly County Wool Pool for years
  • Judged the Make It Yourself with Wool competition for a decade
  • Partnered with NC State University to develop a bionic leg after losing her own in 2013

Mabry and her husband Joe still raise sheep along Highway 52 South.


🕊️ Stanly County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Loss of Deputy Todd Green

The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the passing of Deputy Jeffrey Todd Green, who devoted 33 years to law enforcement — including 27 years with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office and 6 years with Stanly County.

Deputy Green was known for his leadership in the Explorer Program and service on the North Carolina D.A.R.E. Board.
He was especially passionate about his role as a school resource officer, where he strived to be “a positive influence on all the kids.”
