US Federal Shutdown Could Delay Food Assistance Locally
The Stanly County Health Department says the ongoing federal government shutdown could soon impact local families who rely on SNAP and WIC benefits.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has directed the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to pause November SNAP benefits beginning November 1st.
- More than 1.4 million North Carolinians use SNAP to help afford groceries.
- October benefits will continue as normal, but no new funds will be added to EBT cards in November unless federal funding resumes.
Additionally, NCDHHS said it doesn’t have funds to continue WIC benefits beyond early November for the 262,000 North Carolinians enrolled in the program, which provides nutritious food and infant formula for women, infants, and young children.
The Stanly County Health Department says the situation is evolving:
“Any benefits currently on your EBT card are still available to use. We’ll continue sharing updates through social media and the Health Department and DSS websites.”
