🏛️ Albemarle City Council Applicants Introduce Themselves

Six Albemarle residents have stepped forward to fill the vacant City Council seat left by Chris Whitley.
Candidates include Tasker Fleming, Bob Gruber, Martha Hughes, David Morgan, Victoria Ramos, and Scott St. John.

Tasker Fleming — who volunteers through the city’s Recreation Department and hosts the Front Porch Bluegrass Show — said he’s eager to serve.

“I’ve listened to a lot of complaints. I can listen, I can reason, I can sit beside you and ask questions. I’m proud of what’s going on in Albemarle.”

Bob Gruber, a longtime community figure, emphasized teamwork and a desire to help move the city forward.

“My desire is like y’all — to be part of a solution instead of a problem. I want to be part of the leadership.”

Former Councilwoman Martha Hughes also put her name in for consideration. She previously served nine years on council, from 2013 to 2022.

“My previous experience provides two key advantages — I understand how this council operates and can be a productive partner on day one.”

David Morgan, who has served in local government, highlighted his experience with countywide strategic planning.

“Nothing is more important than government that’s closest to the people. I’ve read your strategic plan — it’s good, and I’m glad it’s an ongoing process.”

Council will continue hearing from the remaining candidates — Victoria Ramos and Scott St. John — at a future meeting.
