🚰 $4.9 Million Coming for Local Water Infrastructure
- The Pfeiffer-North Stanly Water Association will receive $4.9 million in State Revolving Funds for its North Main Street and Old 52 waterline replacement project.
- Governor Josh Stein announced the funding as part of a broader initiative benefitting 27 counties with over $204 million for 48 drinking water and wastewater projects statewide.
- Projects funded will help address PFAS and other forever chemicals, replace lead pipes, and improve resiliency in storm recovery.
- Governor Stein said: “When you turn on the faucet in your home, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether that water is safe for your family.”
- NC DEQ Secretary Reed Wilson added: “This funding will address aging infrastructure and improve public health for communities large and small.”
- Funding comes from the State Revolving Funds and includes IIJA funds, some of which may be partially forgiven loans.
🏫 Forum Targets School Consolidation Concerns
- A group called Better Stanly County Schools, made up of concerned parents, held a public forum last Thursday night at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center Livestock Arena.
- Organizer Bill Shaefer opened the event with strong criticism of the school board: “They kept you in the dark… They’ve led people to a false narrative that consolidation is the only way forward.”
- Around 60–70 people attended, including county commissioners, school board members, mayors, and County Manager Andy Lucas.
- Concerns centered on school consolidation and community schools, particularly Ridgecrest Elementary.
- Commissioner Billy Mills and School Board Member Megan Almond also spoke.
- The forum’s purpose, according to organizers, was to inform, listen, and issue a call to action for community-driven solutions to public education.
