🚓 Arrest in Drug Trafficking Case
Authorities arrested Joseph David Smith, 34, on multiple drug charges following a traffic stop Tuesday:
- Trafficking methamphetamine
- Possession/manufacture of a fraudulent ID
- Felony possession of cocaine
- Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and distribute a Schedule II substance
- Maintaining a vehicle for drug activity
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Failure to maintain lane control
Smith is being held at the Stanly County Detention Center under a $500,000 bond.
💧 $1.2M Grant Moves Forward for Richfield Sewer Project
The Stanly County Commissioners approved moving ahead with a $1.2 million DEQ grant for sewer system improvements in Richfield, including installation of a SCADA system to monitor pumps remotely.
County Manager Andy Lucas explained the long process:
“We’ve been working on this for close to three years. COVID slowed communication with the state, bids went up, and we had to adjust our approach. This action lets us finally move forward.”
- Total subcontractor cost: ~$761,000
- Engineering with Wooten included in total budget
- Final cost expected to be under $1.2 million
🏠 Extra Funds for Low-Income Housing
The county will receive $209,844 in additional state funding for its CDBG Revitalization Program to aid low-income elderly residents.
Andy Lucas said:
“We currently have three houses under construction. This extra funding should allow us to complete all five homes we had planned, despite rising construction costs.”
📚 Local School Librarian Honored
Shane Young, media specialist at East Albemarle Elementary, has been named the 2025 Region 6 School Librarian of the Year by the NC School Library Media Association.
The school district praised her:
“Ms. Young’s dedication to fostering a love of reading, supporting student learning, and creating a welcoming library space makes her an incredible asset.”
