⚖️ Former Troy Mayor & School Board Member Face Charges
- The Montgomery Herald reports that former Troy Mayor Sherri Allgood and current school board member Cindy Flowers Taylor have been charged with writing bad checks connected to the Love Academy, a youth program they helped operate.
- Workers were paid during the first half of the summer 2023 camp, but payment for the second half was delayed with a text message telling staff to “hold off on cashing” their checks.
- On Monday, Allgood was in court on an unrelated stalking charge against Dylan Allen, but the judge dismissed the case for lack of evidence.
- Following the hearing, Allgood was served with multiple outstanding warrants, including a felony worthless check charge of $5,000. She was released on a written promise to appear in Montgomery County Court.
🏡 Albemarle Council Approves Rezoning
- The Albemarle City Council approved a rezoning request for a 3.27-acre parcel on Norwood Circle.
- The land, previously split-zoned, will now be classified entirely as R-10 residential, clearing the way for single-family homes or duplexes.
- Brittany McClendon, Planning and Zoning, explained: “The parcel is currently vacant and undeveloped… the topography is moderately sloping with no watershed or floodplain concerns. It is suitable for development.”
- Realtor DJ Camp IV, representing Green Group LLC, said the plan is simple: “We’d end up doing two single-family homes or duplexes. The rest of the land will remain a personal homestead for the Price family.”
🎓 School Concerns Raised in Forums
- The group Better Stanly County Schools has been holding public forums about the future of local schools.
- Albemarle Councilman Dr. Chris Bramlett attended two recent meetings and urged more city residents to get involved: “There is a great deal of concern about our schools throughout the county… We’ve invested millions in an industrial park, but it will be hard to recruit companies if families moving here find poor schools.”
- Bramlett added that possible school mergers may be coming: “If you don’t like it, you need to be at these meetings to let leaders know what you think. What happens with our schools is important for all of Albemarle.”
