🏛️ County Commissioners to Meet Tonight
The Stanly County Board of Commissioners meets this evening, beginning with a closed session at 5:30 PM to consult with the county attorney, followed by their regular monthly meeting at 6:00 PM in the Gene McIntyre Meeting Room at Stanly Commons.
Commissioners will:
- Consider a jury commission appointment
- Review the consent agenda, including several Sheriff’s Office budget amendments
- Approve a drug unit drone purchase, a vehicle replacement, and allocation of insurance settlement funds toward a new vehicle
🏙️ Albemarle City Council Agenda
The Albemarle City Council convenes tonight at 6:30 PM in City Hall Council Chambers.
Items on the agenda include:
- A resolution celebrating Public Power Week
- A tourism report from Casey Brooks, Director of the Stanly County Convention & Visitors Bureau
- A Loose Leaf Season update
- A resolution honoring James Nantz
- Consideration of a contractor selection for solid waste collection services
🏘️ Norwood and Locust Councils to Convene
The Norwood Town Council also meets this evening at 6:00 PM at Norwood City Hall.
Meanwhile, the Locust City Council will meet October 9th to review several planning and zoning requests:
- Two Bucks Saloon: Proposal to repurpose the former Buzzed Viking building as a saloon/bar
- Ray Ray’s Chicken Shack: Plans to convert the former Highway 55 Burgers & Shakes into a quick-serve chicken restaurant
- Locust Mower: A zoning change request to use the rear building at 117 North Central Avenue for a lawnmower and small engine repair shop
The Locust Planning and Zoning Board has already recommended approval on all three proposals.
🌲 Prestigious Honor for Stanly County Health Worker
A Stanly County Health Department employee was honored with the Order of the Longleaf Pine, one of North Carolina’s highest civilian awards.
Wendy Dorsey Rachels received the surprise recognition during a Health and Human Services Board meeting last Thursday, where she believed she was scheduled to give a presentation.
HHS Director Dolly Clayton presented the award, saying:
“It is a great honor to present the prestigious Order of the Longleaf Pine to Wendy Dorsey Rachels, a dedicated public servant whose 31-year career has left an indelible mark on social services across North Carolina.”
Rachels’ career includes:
- Six years with the Stanly News & Press before entering public service in 1994
- Leadership roles in both Cabarrus County DSS and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services
- Extensive volunteer work supporting veterans, including creating a $12,500 scholarship endowment for North Carolina students
