🚨 Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run
- A pedestrian was struck and killed in the early morning hours of October 1st at the intersection of Highway 24/27 and Henson Street in Albemarle.
- Police say the driver, 19-year-old Paul Burr of Albemarle, fled the scene but was later arrested at his home.
- Burr is charged with driving while impaired and felony hit-and-run resulting in death.
- The victim’s name has not yet been released as authorities continue efforts to notify family.
- Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Honeycutt at 704-984-9519.
🏫 Schools Show Growth, Push for Bus Drivers
- April Coble with Stanly County Schools told the EDC meeting that 11 schools met or exceeded growth goals last year.
- Richfield Elementary improved to a “B” rating, while Albemarle High School rose to a “C” — a rating it had not reached in many years.
- The district is making a major push to recruit bus drivers, with a job fair set for October 13th.
- A school bus will be on-site for applicants to check out
🎓 Stanly Community College Updates
Dr. John Enamait, president of Stanly Community College, shared several updates with county leaders:
- The college recently hosted its first business tour of the new trades facility.
- “It was a vision realized… hopefully the commissioners believe it’s a worthwhile investment, not just for now, but for the future,” said Dr. Enamait.
- A dedication ceremony for the new facility is set for Thursday, October 9th at 11:30 AM with public open house tours later that evening.
- Enrollment is up nearly 9% this fall, continuing growth from the summer.
- The college is expanding apprenticeship programs and offering more community college courses directly on local high school campuses.
- Plans are also underway for a new public safety training facility in Locust, currently in the design phase.
