🚓 Governor’s Reward Announced in 2003 Locust Homicide Case
The Locust Police Department announced that Governor Josh Stein has authorized up to a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of 6-year-old Chance Douglas Smith, nearly 22 years ago.
- The case dates back to December 13, 2003, when Chance was reported missing in the Scout Road area of Locust.
- He was later found barely responsive in a nearby pasture and died soon after. His death was ruled a homicide from blunt force trauma.
Over the past seven months, Locust detectives and State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agents have reopened and re-examined the case, reviewing evidence and conducting interviews in multiple states.
Police Chief Jeff Shew said:
“We’re asking those who know something and have never said it — or those who may not have told us everything they know — to please come forward and help give Chance and his family both closure and justice.”
Anyone with information should contact Detective Sgt. Brittany Tucker or Detective Jared Smith at 704-888-4744, or the SBI’s Southern Piedmont Office at 704-454-5264.
