🚨 Man Faces Multiple Drug and Weapons Charges

  • 38-year-old Joshua Darrell Hatley was arrested Wednesday on several serious charges:
    • Possession of methamphetamine
    • Possession of drug paraphernalia
    • Maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for drug trafficking
    • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • He is being held under a $350,000 bond at the Stanly County Detention Center.

🏫 Stanly Schools Staffing Status “A Little Better” Than Last Year

  • At the latest Stanly County Economic Development Commission meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jarrod Dennis addressed ongoing teacher staffing questions.
  • While exact numbers fluctuated, Dr. Dennis said they are close to last year’s pace: “We’re right about where we are… If anything, we’re doing a little better than we did last year.”
  • The district is facing anticipated cuts in Title I funding, already down about $500,000, affecting some federally funded positions.
  • He also noted that few teaching hires were made using pandemic-era ESSER funds, and the district avoided mass staffing shifts when those funds expired.

🌿 Even Landscaping Positions Hard to Fill

  • During the same meeting, the school board discussed the state of landscaping around school campuses.
  • Dr. Dennis explained that staffing remains a challenge: “It is hard to keep that position staffed. We’re trying to keep it internal because it’s more cost-effective than hiring a for-profit contractor.”

🎓 Stanly Community College Sees Summer Enrollment Jump

  • Dr. John Enamait, President of Stanly Community College, reported a 23% increase in summer enrollment over last year. “We’re hoping that is a good indication for an improvement of fall enrollment… It’s too early to tell.”
  • The college began fall registration earlier than usual, and hopes to see the momentum continue.

âś… SCC Earns 10-Year Accreditation Reaffirmation

  • Stanly Community College has been fully reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). “It really is exciting… We’re not on any sanction or monitoring, and that speaks to the quality of education our constituents are getting.”
  • Due to changes in North Carolina law, SCC will need to change accrediting agencies in about 10 years—an effort described as a “tremendous amount of work.”
