🏫 South Stanly Middle School Gets Temporary Cooling Solution
Students will have a cool start to the school year after South Stanly Middle School’s 240-ton chiller failed earlier this summer.
- Two 120-ton rental chillers are now in place to keep the building comfortable.
- Monthly rental cost: $13,701, plus an initial $19,881 for setup.
- Estimated timeline for delivery of a new chiller: about 30 weeks.
Facilities Director Keith Benton said the rental was urgent:
“If I wouldn’t have rented that chiller, the mold would’ve exploded. It would’ve been nasty… I really didn’t have a choice.”
The rental will remain in place until mid-November, costing just under $100,000 in total.
A new chiller will cost about $290,000—not including installation or crane fees.
🔥 West Stanly High School to Get New Boiler
The board also approved replacing West Stanly High School’s main boiler, which failed last December.
- Temporary smaller boiler kept the building heated last winter.
- Approved bid: $128,693 from Armstrong.
🏆 CTE Director Honored with Regional Award
Mandy Melton, Stanly County Schools’ Career and Technical Education Director, has been named Career and Technical Education Administrator of the Year for the Southwest Region by the North Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education.
Superintendent Dr. Jared Dennis praised Melton’s 26 years of service:
“We are so proud of this well-deserved recognition and grateful for your leadership, passion, and commitment to success.”
